I made this checklist for some friends that were coming on a weekend backpacking trip with us during the summer in the Canadian Rockies. It can still get down to 10 C at night sometimes which is why I have all the warm closthes. I have ended up sharing it with more people new to tent camping and backpacking and thought others might find it useful. It includes more than what I might take depending on the trip but I find it a good starting point.

Here is a list of the essentials J, made it with obvious stuff so I can also use it as a checklist.

    Gear

    Tent

    Sleeping bags

    Sleeping pads

Pillow stuff sack/stuff sack for clothes

    Backpack

    Flash light

    Head lamps

    Kitchen

    Bowls/plates

    Fork, spoon, knife

    Water bottles

    Stove and pots

    Cooking utensils

Something that can hold hot liquid/travel mug (also can hold water on your way up)

Camp Suds (also good for personal cleaning J)

    Clothes

Waterproof or resistant jacket and pants

    Bandana and/or hat

    Sandals

    Hiking shoes

    Extra pair of socks

    Undies

    Swim suit

    Pants

    Shorts

    Tank Top

    Long Sleeve

    Warm Layer

    Long underwear

    Toque

    Gloves

Example of my top layers – waterproof jacket, down vest, softshell/light fleece, wool long sleeves, light synthetic long sleeves, tank top, sports bra

    Food

    Coffee/Tea

    Food ideas:

    Breakfast - oatmeal, apples, quinoa

Lunch - pre-made bagels and cream cheese, crackers, meat, cheese, instant soup

Dinner - pasta and sauce, black bean soft tacos, baked potatoes, hamburger helper with Ives veggie ground round (vegetarian meat substitutes last longer without a cooler)

Snacks - fruit, nuts, chocolate, cheese, pepperoni sticks...

I love making dinners around the camp fire that may take more time but still easy to pack in.

    Other ideas

Toilet paper in a zip lock baggie

    Quick dry or small towel

    Sunscreen

    Bug Spray

    Hiking Polls or Stick

    Phone / Camera

    First Aid Kit

Large Zip lock baggies (good for garbage, dirty clothes, etc)

Bathroom items – face wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, lip chap

    Sunglasses

    Bear Spray

    Bear Bangers

    Water purifiers / Water pump

    Maps

    First Aid Kit

    Large Knife

Rope and Carbineers to hang packs (out of bears reach)

    Tarp and Rope

Extra Batteries (for headlamps, spot messenger, etc)

    Spot Messenger

Erm ... did you miss off "team of sherpa's to carry it all" ?

Seriously, very useful - especially for a beginner like me.

It would be great if it could be broken down into a small-bag list of essentials for a day-out trip and then the extra "layers" of equipment necessary for more intense excursions.
