Brand of ski doesn't really matter IMO for a non-frequent or beginner skier - with that said I would recommend sticking with a respected brand like Rossingol, Solomon, K2, Volkl, etc. You know the quality and overall performance should be good. If you go for a really cheap ski the ski performance, weight, and overall quality will effect how you feel when you ski. Good equipment often makes for a better experience. When starting off in any new sport it takes a little time to learn what you want but go to a few stores and find out what size and type of ski you might like. Maybe you can catch an end of season sale, demo sale or you could try to find second hand. Good condition second hand skis can often be found at ski resort pro shops (I've bought second hand from Kicking Horse Mountain Resort), second hand sport stores or Kijiji. Ski boots tend to be more important / comfortable to buy new. However if you buy boots second hand you can always buy a new boot liner, I really like my intuition ski boot liners.
If you really want to get into skiing owning gear and not having to stand in line to rent each day saves time and energy. You also feel invested so you might end up getting out more. Happy ski shopping...mmm...ski shopping.
