Having a good child carrier is just as important as having a good stroller. Having the freedom to explore hiking trails, uneven pathways and even dog parks in the city is a nice break from pushing a stroller or always going at a toddlers pace.

After two kids and three years of using numerous child carriers for walks and hikes we have found our favorite 'adventure' child carrier for kids 6 months to 2 years - the Osprey Poco Plus.

We have owned a MEC brand child backpack carrier, Ergo (which I love but more for city, zoo, shorter walks), Baby Bjorn, BabyHawk, Moby Wrap, various slings and the Osprey Poco Plus backpack child carrier.

Osprey gets five stars as it is comfortable, sturdy, easy to use, lots of storage and both of my kids seem very comfortable. If you aren't familiar with the Osprey brand they make good quality bags - backpacking, day packs, etc. Osprey uses their backpack knowledge well for creating a child carrier.

Features that make this backpack carrier AWESOME:

    1. Kick stands for ground is very sturdy. Great feature for lifting bag onto back, putting down, keeping baby sleeping, safe place for kids to sit during breaks or loading car.
    2. Easy to raise and lower baby/kid seat.
    3. Seem comfortable for child: the child has a good view from the carrier as opposed to being lower on a back like with the Ergo.
    4. Easy tighten waist buckle.
    5. Large gear holder and many pockets. We can fit jackets, camera, diapers and snacks with ease.
    6. Sun shade actually shades and helps protects from tree branches.
    7. Easy back adjust so mom and dad can switch while on hike with ease.

    Recommendations with this carrier:

    1. Attach toys or soother with rings or strap to bag so child can hold or play with something if they choose.
    2. Bring lots of snacks as they help make any hike better :).
    3. We leave the kick stand open when we have the bottom pocket full, it allows more packing room and has never gotten in the way.

    What I would change:

    1. Cost. But like a good stroller if you plan to go on walks or hikes it is worth it!

Five star rating from me and this sleeping child!
