I am on my third pair of Salomon shoes, specifically the XA Pro 3D GTX's. They are a trail runner but work well as a light hiker and all around shoe. They have GTX aka Gore-Tex waterproof membrane.

There are some shoes that you find which feel great and work in many different environments which means they hold a place in your shoe fleet for many years.

I am 5'8", 160 lbs and have size 9 feet and the size 9 in the Salomons fits me perfectly. There is just enough room in the front of the shoe so I don't bang my toes when I am going downhill and the Salomon quick lacing can be adjusted in a flash. This has turned out to be especially useful when flying for travel as there are no laces to get in the way when slipping shoes on and off at an airport.

If there is any complaint to these shoes which in some cases is actually a positive it's that the soles are a bit soft. This means that when you are hiking on really sharp rocks you can feel a lot. On the flip side when you are scrambling up hills this sensitivity is great for feeling foot holds. This sole configuration is also great on pavement. It has a fairly balanced sole so it can also work in the gym.

I am sure these shoes can also be improved with an insole. I haven't tried this but perhaps someone has some experience with this.

I will continue to buy these shoes as they wear out and if they are as good of quality as they have been.
